At Van Till Family Farm Winery, we believe that great wine is best enjoyed with great food—and even better company. That’s why we’re excited to host our annual Wine Club Members BBQ, a special event to celebrate and thank our loyal members for their continued support. This isn’t just any BBQ; it’s a Santa Maria Style barbecue, a tradition that brings the flavors of California’s central coast right here to Missouri.
What is Santa Maria Style Barbecue?
You might be wondering, what exactly is a Santa Maria Style barbecue? In California, what we often refer to as grilling here in Missouri is considered barbecue. Santa Maria is a quaint town on California’s central coast, about 10 miles north of Santa Barbara, with a rich history rooted in cattle ranching and strawberry farming. The tradition of Santa Maria Style barbecue began with the cowboys, or vaqueros, who worked the cattle ranches. After a long day of work, these cowboys would gather around pits of red oak, letting the wood burn down to glowing embers, and then cook their beef directly over the coals. The result? Juicy, smoky, and flavorful meat that became a hallmark of the region.
What’s on the Menu?
Cliff, who has a passion for barbecue, will be firing up the grill with his specialty—Tri-Tip. This cut of beef, seasoned simply with salt, pepper, and garlic, is cooked to perfection over those traditional red oak coals, resulting in a tender, flavorful dish that’s truly the star of the show.But that’s not all. In true Santa Maria style, we’ll also be serving up Cliff’s classic macaroni salad, wood-fired oven garlic French bread, and pinquito beans—a small, pinkish bean that’s a staple of the region. And because no barbecue is complete without dessert, we’re adding a little Missouri twist with our homemade strawberry pie, a nod to Santa Maria’s famed strawberry production.
